# Description

Coming from Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 4 was not what I was expecting. While the gun play was much improved, I wasn't playing Fallout for the gun mechanics, for me it was mostly the roleplaying I enjoyed which this entry took a step back in. Even when I came to terms with what the game was a completed my first playthrough (deciding to take on the persona of Nate) I still wasn't quite satisfied and was craving an experience closer to the other 3D games, but I still wanted to experience the content I hadn't visited before.

Thanks to all these wonderful modders (and one minor contribution of my own) I was able to assemble a Fallout experience that got me enjoying the game far more than before. These mods bring Fallout 4 much closer to the Fallout 3 experience and I completed my last playthrough with these mods taking me through all the DLC and across 412 locations. I thank these modders for their efforts as it has granted me much joy.

# Main features

Here are the mods that I consider core to the classic experience:

- Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch \
  Gotta get those bugs fixed.
- Start Me Up\
  Lets you get out of the archetype protagonist Nate/Nora. Essential for improving the role playing experience.
- Full Dialogue Interface\
  Makes it so you can see what you're going to say just like all the other Fallout games. Even though you only have 4 options still, I found there were many cases where I wanted to choose option "X" over "A"
- HUDFramework\
  Going to be required for Full Dialogue Interface, as well as other useful UI mod if you choose to add more.
- Silent Protagonist\
  Removes the hard work of the voice actors (they still got paid). Essential for role playing in my opinion.
- SCDC Subjective Cinematic Dialogue Camera\
  Points the camera at the person who's speaking, usually avoiding it pointing at yourself. Brings speech closer to Fallout 3's.
- Classic Speech Checks\
  Removes the dice roll for speech checks and makes it a hard Charisma limit like Fallout 3.
- Lowered Weapons\
  Walking with your weapons drawn can make a good chunk of the screen obscured, this helps with that.
- Removed Stimpack Injection\
  Makes using a stimpack instant like Fallout 3. Less realism, but we're not concerned with that.
- No Settlement Attacks\
  This allows you to pretty much just ignore settlements altogether if you want (which I did) but even if you don't at least allows you to focus on what you're doing instead of getting alerted of an attack and being punished for it.
- Hold Still and Be Quiet\
  Changes the Vault Boy animations to just be still images as you'd see in Fallout 3, also removes their sounds.
- No Bethesda and SPECIAL Intro\
  If it's your first time playing maybe want to watch it once? Doesn't really add anything, but makes getting to the main menu faster.
- Hey That's not Junk\
  Allows you to prevent certain items (like pre-war money) from being scrapped automatically by making them misc items.
- Everyone's Best Friend\
  Allows Dogmeat to be a companion alongside others like in other games.
- No Holotape Tease Texture\
  There's a rubble texture that makes it look like there's a holotape on the ground and it is maddening, this keeps you sane.

These mods are non-essential to making the game more classic but I found them to be great improvements that also boosted my enjoyment:

- No Respawn\
  Cleared locations stay cleared. Fallout 3 has respawn but for some reason 4's feels a lot quicker to me.
- Power Armor Animation Changes\
  Makes getting in and out of Power Armor faster.
- PA Low FC beep at 5\
  Instead of your power armor beeping when the fusion core is at 25%, it'll beep at 5%.
- Companions Go Home\
  Allows you to send the companions back where they came from or the player home instead of a settlement.
- Quest Summary by default\
  Shows the quest summary in your PipBoy for quests instead of the vault boy (clashes with hold still and be quiet).
- Diamond City Auto Close Gate\
  Makes it so the protective gate doesn't always stay open.
- Crafting Highlight Fix\
  Adjusts how the highlighted item during crafting appears so you can actually see it.
- Concept Art Main Menu Replacer\
  Replaces the 3D main menu with concept art, seems to give a mild initial loading boost.
- Optimized Vanilla Textures\
  I have an older system so this was useful.
- This is MY Bed\
  Allows you to craft beds that other NPCs won't sleep in.

These last few mods are ones that are in there for fun or utility. They can add some overpoweredness but that can also just be disabled or avoided in game. I can remove them from the collection if that's what people would rather. I do see them as quality of life/fun enhancers:

- More Armor Slots\
  This allows you to wear more than just the few underclothes that are allowed under armor pieces. You can wear anything, which can make you a little over powered by wearing some special gear that already has good stats, but I'd like to wear something other than the vault suit, I also just didn't use power armor when I got to that point, decent compromise.
- No Armor Clipping\
  Helps with the above mod to avoid most clothing from clipping with the armor worn on top.
- Legendary Rearmed\
  Allows you to move legendary effects on and off weapons and armor. Taking them off allows you to scrap them or maybe you found a great effect but it's on a pipe pistol.
- Linked Storage Containers\
  Allows you to have stored storage without having to setup supply routes. Really handy for moving stuff around.
- Scavver's Toolbox\
  Allows you to scrap junk on the go

# Not Recommended

I wanted to call out a popular mod that I don't recommend use for a classic Fallout 4 experience.

**Sim Settlements 2**

I initially had this installed because I thought it would help me be able to ignore settlements more so while still being able to build them up. The mod does allow you to auto-build settlements but it also adds additional quests to the game. There's a quest line that acts as a tutorial that you need to do in order to get started, but it doesn't work out well if you want to ignore settlements because you will keep getting things to do once you've gotten what you need to auto build them. Some of the additional quests, many aren't settlement related, are bugged as well that won't allow you to complete them and you can find them inserted in vanilla areas of the game. I eventually carefully uninstalled it from my game force completing/killing quests, manually remove all running scripts and data from my save file, then uninstalling the mod. It's fine if you want to do a lot more with building but like I said there are some quests that may cause issues.

# Wishful Mods

These are some mods that I wish I had when playing, as far as I know they don't exist but if they do I will add them to the collection:

- No terminal animation\
  I dislike the terminal animation so much. I rather it just come up instantly like in Fallout 3, or even in Fallout 76 when you're wearing power armor. There's been too many times where I've gotten stuck in the auto animation and had to quit the game. I'm wondering if this can be accomplished by spawning the player directly to the spot they need to be in to access the terminal.
- Flat screen terminals\
  The round edges of terminals (especially the ones with round screens) is a neat trick but it just makes them hard to read.
- No power armor animation\
  It's great that we have it sped up but it would be fantastic if there wasn't an animation for getting into power armor at all.

This is a collection for people who are not satisfied with Fallout 4's vanilla game which strays from the previous 3D entries. These mods are tweaks that enhance the vanilla experience without changing much of the core game content itself.
