RATIONALE

This is a very small collection I have put together in order to provide a VR user new to FO4 with hands, arms, a body and holsters for your weapons. It only requires the base game, so no DLCs are needed. I will also give specific guidance and tips for those wanting to play seated rather than standing as this creates some issues which are not easy to resolve. Once you get this all working, you can then either start exploring the wasteland with your shiny new body, or you can use this as a stable foundation on which to built a larger collection.

PLAYING SEATED

If you are new to FO4 then you might be surprised that when the game starts you do not have any in game hands, arms or body - you will just see the controllers. Secondly, if you play seated you will be very short and as there is no player height setting, the only way in-game way to rectify this is to change the VR World Scale, which  makes everything look really tiny. This can be rectified either by installing a mod which allows you to calibrate your height, or using a third party tool like fpsVR or OVR Advanced Settings to lower the floor height - thus fooling FO4 into believing you are standing up. I tried the mod, and although it is possible to correct the height issue, there are a lot of settings to adjust and it really isn't easy to get a realistic height/scale if you are sitting - it also lost the settings when I reloaded the game later on. So even though both fpsVR and OVR Advanced Setting are paid-for extras, they will provide a much simpler and more stable solution to the height/scale issue. I use fpsVR and all you have to do is open the Play Space tab and decrease the virtual floor height - it is best to do this once in game standing in front of Nora so you can match your eye level with her. As an added bonus you can also run simple console commands using fpsVR from inside the headset (details below).

INCLUDED MODS

1\. Fallout 4 Script Extender VR (F4SEVR)

This is a tool that allows mod authors to create more complex mods using scripts. It is required by many mods and it simply places an .exe and some .dll files in the Fallout 4 VR directory. For it to work you need to use the f4sevr\_loader.exe to launch FO4 from within Vortex.

2\. Fallout4 VR Tools

This is another tool which allows people to create mods that receive input from various VR controllers. It simply adds a .dll and a script inside the Data directory.

3\. FRIK - Full Player Body with IK

This is the key mod that will give you virtual hands, arms and a body. However, it is not recommended to enable it until you have completed the introduction and left Vault 111. This is because your game will crash on loading or when you try to leave the vault via the elevator. There is however a fix for this which will enable you to use it from the off. FRIK also allows you to adjust the player height/scale but it is tricky to do if playing seated and I wouldn't recommend it. In addition, when using FRIK you should not make a save when wearing the Power Armour, as this can cause problems with the size and position of your in game body.

4\. FRIK - New Game Crash Fixes

This mod provides a fix for the crashes you can experience if you enable FRIK before you start the game. It makes some changes to the scripts to avoid the crash, but it also removes the ability to change your character stats when leaving the vault in the elevator.

5\. Virtual Holsters

This mod adds seven virtual holsters to your FRIK body where you can place weapons. Once a weapon is assigned to a holster it can only be drawn or placed into that same holster, it is also possible to configure the position of the holsters, which will be very important if you play seated, especially if your chair has armrests. You can change which button you want to use to draw the weapon in the configuration settings - by default it is set to the A button on Oculus Touch controllers.

6\. Virtual Chems

This mod adds five body holsters where you can keep StimPaks and other injectables/consumables.  Five different types of chems are assigned to these holsters by default, you can change these and their positions in the configuration settings. You can also change which button you want to use to draw the weapon in the configuration settings - by default it is set to the A button on Oculus Touch controllers.

7\. 10mm Pistol Resize

This mod simply replaces the default 10mm pistol with a model that is 20% smaller. This mod isn't essential, but because the default 10mm pistol model is disproportionately large this makes settings your height and the scale of your hands, arms and body a bit easier.

10\. HUIDE\_VR - Hide HUD Elements in VR

This mod allows you to hide all or some of the UI elements. Again it isn't essential, but it certainly makes FO4 more immersive - you can choose which elements to hide using the FOMOD installer. You may wish to leave everything visible initially and re-install it later to hide elements you don't want to see. You can also hide the enemy healthbars with a simple .ini tweak (see below).

I am not planning to add any more mods to this collection because many of the mods I want to add do require the DLCs - I will create a separate collection which builds on this one instead.

INSTALLATION

You can install all of the mods into Vortex from Nexus Mods and you don't really need to worry about the load order. There are a few manual steps you need to take in order for everything to work as expected. You are advised to add the following additions\* to your Fallout4Custom.ini and Fallout4Prefs.ini files:

\*If you are using the Fallout 4 Configuration Tool - By Bilago (recommended) then you must make these changes to the .ini files through the configuration tool by clicking on 'Edit INIs Directly', because it makes them read only and otherwise your changes will not be saved.

Using the PipBoy and Configuring the Holsters

You will not be able to configure FRIK or the Virtual Holsters/Chems until you have acquired the PipBoy wrist controller at the end of the introduction. I firstly recommend setting the PipBoy to display as a large screen in front of you rather than on your wrist. I found it very difficult to open, read and navigate the screen when it was on my wrist and the display screen did not line up with the actual model. Once you are happy with the display you need to open the Inventory and navigate to the Misc section to access the Holotape Configuration settings. However, in my testing, these did not appear until you save the game and then reload it. The Virtual Chems Holotape will not appear in your PipBoy even after reloading, so you will need to craft one at a Chem Station - you can find one in Sanctuary behind one of the houses near the bridge. Once the holotapes are visible you can then configure your body and holsters. I do not recommend trying to change your height/scale using the FRIK Configuration Holotape if you play seated - use fpsVR or OVR Advanced Settings to lower the floor height instead.

&#x20;In order to assign a weapon to a holster, you must equip it, then open the Holster Configuration Holotape and select the slot you want it stored in. It will then disappear from your hand and the holster will show as full. You can then draw the weapon by moving you hand close to the holster and pressing the A button. Now, if you picked up the extra gun and baton on the way there this can be confusing, because if you press the grip button instead (which seems more intuitive), the second gun/baton is then equipped from your inventory and you obviously can't re-holster it as the holster is full. So I would recommend dropping the second gun/baton whilst you initially set up the holsters. To remove a weapon from a holster you need to select it in the Holster Configuration settings whilst the weapon is holstered. I would recommend switching the draw button from A to Grip in the configuration settings to avoid confusion.

Unlike the weapon holsters, the Chem holsters are pre-configured to hold specific types of chems by default and you can change these by opening the Configuration Holotape and selecting the current chem - this will then cycle through all the options. To grab a StimPak initially you will have to hover over the holster with your left hand and press the X button (you can change this to Grip in the configuration settings) To administer the StimPak you have to press the X (or Grip) button and thrust it into your right hand with some force.

Using the Console

It is not normally possible to use console commands in FO4VR without taking the headset off and typing at the keyboard. Even then the console is very small and the text is pretty much impossible to read, which makes it difficult to test out mods. However, if you use fpsVR to adjust your height you can also assign keystrokes to buttons and use this run simple commands from inside the headset. So you press ' to open the console, type your command e.g. tcl, then press Return to run it and ' once again to close the console. There are only 18 buttons though so you have to choose wisely. These are the 18 keystroke assignments I use and the commands I can easily type:

If you want to run more complex terminal commands I would recommend checking out VoiceAttack which allows you to assign keystrokes and strings of text to specific voice commands.

Contrast Adaptive Sharpening

I also recommend using vrperkit from: <https://github.com/fholger/vrperfkit/releases/tag/v0.3> you can use this tool to upscale, sharpen and use foveated rendering to get a better performance without too much drop in visual quality. All of the features can be changed and enabled/disabled in the provided config file. All you have to do is copy the two files: dxgi.dll & vrperfkit.yml into your Fallout 4 VR/ directory. These are the settings I recommend:

This disables the upscaling but retains the sharpening and the foveated rendering. If you need more performance you can reduce the renderscale.

Hopefully this will be enough to get you up and running, and you can then start to explore the wastelands or use it as a solid foundation on which to build a bigger collection.&#x20;

There are some specific issues you need to be aware of when installing mods for FO4VR. Many of the mods available require all of the DLCs from the flat game to be copied across and installed in your FO4VR directory - so if you don't have those avoid any mods that require them. If you do want to install the DLCs remember you need to [downgrade them](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KjAhJ3RAqUxp5TYivW7fjSC_XVEuAafiJmHfCVnb2VI/edit) in order for them to work with FO4VR.

I would not recommend installing the Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch mod as it doesn't  support FO4VR and can cause crashes (although there are allegedly fixes for this).&#x20;

In addition, plugins which were created with the newer version of the Creation Kit (Nov 2019) will not load unless the version number is edited in FO4VREdit - fortunately there is a mod which will do this dynamically for you: [Fallout 4 Version Check Patcher](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/42497) - however this doesn't guarantee that the mod will actually work in FO4VR. Another issue to watch out for are that newer plugins which contain FORMIDs less that XX000800 will not load/work and fixing this requires you to re-number them using FO4VREdit version 4.0.3. Finally, mods which include BA2 files which have the latest next gen version numbers will not load - but there is a tool which you can use to change the version number called: [BA2 Archive Version Patcher](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/82114), which will do this for you. Again this does not guarantee that the mod will actually work.

I will probably upload a larger more ambitious collection after I have done a lot more testing... :)

FO4VR: Play Sitting Down - No DLC

This collection only provides the absolute bare minimum of mods in order to give you in-game hands, arms, a body and some holsters for weapons and stims. No DLCs are required, but please read the description very carefully for instructions and tips etc...
