# Blakhelm Enhancement Project (BEP) : Layer 0 + 1 - UI  and QoL

*The Script and UI basis for my heavily modded New Vegas overhaul project.*

The Blakhelm Enhancement Project is a layered modular mod collection series with the intention of significantly modernizing FNV and including Fallout 1/2 nostalgia without adding lore-unfriendly content and being focused on high end (or medium end) gaming computers.

## What is Layered Modular and Layers?

Layered Modular means that each collection is considered a "Layer" and the user should only install up to the layer they want most, as further layers will be more complex and require more downloading and bandwidth.

This means Layer 2 contains all content from Layer 1, Layer 3 will include Layer 1 and 2, Layer 4 will include Layers 1-3 and so forth

The point of the Layered Modular system is for the user (that's you) to decide how far you want to mod your game and thus, how much you need to download and manage.

Layer 0 + 1 focuses on Script Extenders, Bug Fixes, performance enhancements, crash mitigations, kNVSE, Mod Configuration Menu, UI overhaul and QoL additions. Depending on demand and how well this series goes, I may rename this Layer to 1 and create a separate "Layer 0" with just bug fixes, script extenders/plugins, MCM, and UIO, which will be a perfect clean base for you to add your own mods or just have a bug fixed Vanilla game.

## Goals of the Blakhelm Enhancement Project for Fallout New Vegas

- Modernize Fallout: New Vegas via Graphics, Animations, Audio, Gunplay, User Interface and Quality of Life features
- Take advantage of powerful gaming PCs to significantly improve the overall fidelity of the game
- Make it "relatively" easy to dramatically improve Fallout: New Vegas within minutes instead of hours (i.E. the hours/nights it took for me to configure and test this over, and over, and over, and over and over... )
- Include nostalgia of Fallout 1/2 via Weapons (and Gear?), Interface Changes, and possibly cut content in future Layers considering New Vegas is set within a similar region to the California Wastes of the first two games
- Potentially include sensible, Lore-friendly, but game expanding mods such as the Someguy2000 mods, The Living Desert, and Functional Post Game Ending (We'll find out once we finish this collection journey)

## Notes on some included mods

**FONT COLOR NOTE**: If you follow the font changes from the instructions, you may want to change the HUD Color. Amber works for most of the game, but becomes semi-illegible in the main menu and load screens.

BEP Layer 0 + 1 includes every plugin shown in the Plug-in Checker that comes with MCM and MAPMO. This wasn't just done for completionist sake, but the the final entirety of BEP will eventually use all of them for one reason or the other.

Includes **lStewieAl's Tweaks and Engine Fixes** - allowing you to tweak various aspects of the game to your liking.

Also includes **Just Assorted Mods (JAM)** - however, some of those mods affect gameplay, so you may want to disable Just Bullet Time. Just Hold Breath and Just Vanilla Sprint also changes gameplay, but I consider them essential to this collection series.

**Just Vanilla Sprint** requires **kNVSE Animation Plugin** - it allows support for animation mods, but on it's own it doesn't affect much (other than allowing Just Vanilla Sprint to work). It has been included here

**Weapon Hweel** fits a dual purpose with **Quick Select** - but even at default they don't conflict with each other

**Inventory Search** - can search every "multi-item" menu except ironically, the inventory, because the item category mod (ySi - Categories) interferes with the search ability. Restoring the ability to search the inventory would require removing all the ySi and yUi mod, which remove item icons for sorting and break Quick Select.

A few mods included improve the functionality of the console - granted that is slightly out of scope for an In game overhaul, but you should already know you will probably run into issues that only the console can fix or alleviate, so we might as well make it more user friendly.

The current mod list of 130+ mods is quite absurd for a bug fix/UI Enhancement suite, but the final goal of B.E.P. will include many more mods that change things more significantly

By NOT INSTALLING \*\*Helmet Overlay \*\*and **Truly HD Main Menu and Loadscreens (incl. TTW)**, Layer 0 + 1 is cut down significantly.

**Vanilla UI Plus - Dialog Background Add-on** - At some point I was testing this mod, but forgot to remove it. It slightly conflicts with Return of the Talking Heads by placing a black box behind dialogue, but on top of some of the dialogue overlay. However, on 3440 x 1440 (Ultra Wide) it actually fixes the issue with dialogue text extending past the dialog box grid (but still retains the misaligned black background). **My recommendation is to Disable this mod**. I consider this mod highly optional and may change it in a future revision.\

I made some mistakes with Revision 3

A bunch of mods that were optional in R1 and R2 were accidentally left required. Rev 4 Fixes that

Optional mod "Radar Mod" was not included. Radar Mod will be restored

Added Radar HUD as an optional replacement for Radar Mod. Radar MOD is currently not compatible with oHud, so it will always appear on screen despite your Immersive HUD setting. Radar HUD is compatible with iHUD, but looks different.

## Other Performance Enhancements

You may want to consider **ExRB - Extended Roombounds**\
to maximize performance in some areas. Enough people reported issues with the mod to deter me from including it, but it does reportedly improve performance in REPCONN

I also opted out of **DXVK**, which can apparently bring significant performance boosts. However, I think this changes (or requires changing) the renderer to Vulkan which may cause conflicts with future layers of BEP

## Why should I use B.E.P. instead of Gopher's collections?

[Gopher's Stable New Vegas](https://next.nexusmods.com/newvegas/collections/60wuix) collection is an Excellent starting point from a seasoned Mod Author for new players/tinkerers. However, it only simply introduce bug fixes, plugins, tweaks and patches, and references out of date versions of mods&#x20;

[Gopher's Darnified UI](https://next.nexusmods.com/newvegas/collections/hckjj6) is a good UI starting point as well, but after trying it, I soon found about classic Fallout fonts which work better with VUI+ and the Darnified UI changes the look and feel a bit too much for my liking and I wanted to retain SOME of the elements/design from the base game.

My idea was to play a version of FNV based on some of the improved gunplay vids I've seen on Youtube, with much better graphics, movement, sound, and controls along with modern control and gameplay amenities while giving FNV a bit of classic Fallout flavor.

# FAQ

- **Where are the other layers of BEP?!**\
  *It took MULTIPLE weekends for me to get this just right. It will take more hours and possibly nights of managing and testing mods to get this working right. Much of the ground work is done, so hopefully future layers shouldn't take too long.*
- **Why only Bug Fixes and UI?**\
  *I originally sat down, set up a bunch of mods and started playing. Then I ran into issues such as doors having improper collision, NPCS having Barney Purple faces, and Bloatflies making me stagger all over the place. I've wanted to hunker down and play a full campaign of New Vegas heavily modded, but it was then I knew it would take a ton of time to get just right. Figured I would take that time and compile it into a series of collections for future use*
- **What is the topic of Layer 2?**\
  *Gameplay Overhaul and Animations. This is hard to describe as there will be lots of little changes, Such changes includes improved weapon and environment meshes, easier looting, improved navmeshes, giving NPCs ability to use weapon mods and ammo variants, increased NPC populations (The Living Desert, Mojave Wildlife, Mojave Raiders), realigned iron sights, Karma changes (Karmic Balance), and definitely most of Xilandro's B42 mods. I might even include changes to AI behavior and combat damage (or at least headshot damage)*\

  The idea is to make the gameplay more modern, make gunplay more satisfying and less spongy, and to make some of the game's systems and player-to-environment interactions make more sense or robust.
- **What mod types ARE planned in future Layers?**\
  *Mesh Improvements, potentially Collision Meshes, High Quality textures for the World and Gear, Higher quality bodies and textures for characters (likely FCO or something similar for most NPCs), Lighting and/or ENB and/or Reshade, additional ambient music and music based Radio stations, Improved animations, improved sound assets and sound-affecting systems (such as bullets whizzing by player or 3D sound), Audio and visual improvements for energy weapons, Improvements to throwing weapon usage, Most or all of Xilandro's B42 Mods, potentially the Someguy2000s mods, Weapons/Gear and MAYBE locations from previous Fallout games (if they fit in the Mojave Wasteland), and cut Content. I'm hoping major gameplay changing mods will be among the last layer, but I don't know at this time. Cut Content and gameplay/location changing mods should be among the last layers unless I need to install them earlier in a load order list to prevent conflicts/errors. I've considered lore accurate/friendly style item addition mods, such as Spice of Life, but I don't know if I want those yet.*\

  *The changes to movement and gunplay will likely make the game easier, so it will be recommended to play on harder difficulties or I MAY include mods that rebalances things. I'd rather not include mods that wildly change damage, fire rate, magazine size, and armor values, but this may inevitably happen. I do plan to include mods that make some (or all?) weapons be able to switch their fire rates from Full > Burst > Single, but hopefully there won't be an automatic Hunting Rifle or a Sniping Minigun.*
- **What mod types are NOT planned in future Layers?**\
  *Cheats/God Weapons, Additional Companions (not already in the game/series), New NPCs/Creatures, NSFW/Sex Mods, Anime/Glamour styled mods, Weapons/Gear not featured in the Fallout series, imagery related to real world brands or people unless said imagery is lore Accurate (No Coca-Cola, Marlboro, Spam, or Kraft Mac & Cheese replacements for example), additional Perks/Traits (though some may occur) DLC style mods (The Frontier, TTW, Project California, Project Nevada, etc), JSawyer Ultimate Edition, mods focused on Hardcore/Survival. I generally don't want major location changes, but I have considered mods like Freeside Open and Classic Adobe Buildings in Mojave*

- **Can I add \[Mod X] to the BEP?**\
  *If it isn't already obvious, the more layers of BEP you install, the more complex things will get. The first layer already includes 130+ mods, so there is definitely a chance any mod you add will cause a conflict. I spent many hours and nights to make the collection work correctly, so I can't account for mods you personally include.*\

  *That said, the layered modular design of this mod collection should generally allow for some additional mods to be added to your mod order (such as adding a few world texture and lighting mods on top of Layer 1), but I will not promise support for additional mods unless I find it worthy of being added to one of the collections.*
